A Guide for Parents in the Lead-Up to a Cheerleading or Dance Competition

Cheerleading and dance competitions offer young athletes an opportunity to showcase their talent, creativity, and hard work. As a parent, your support plays a crucial role in helping your child prepare for these exciting events. By providing guidance, encouragement, and a nurturing environment, you can empower your child to excel in the lead-up to a cheerleading or dance competition.

Here are a few practical ways you can help your child in achieving their best performance.

1. Understand Their Passion:

To effectively support your child, take the time to understand their passion for cheerleading or dance. Familiarise yourself with the sport's or dance style's fundamentals, rules, and competition criteria. Engage in conversations with your child about their goals, aspirations, and challenges. By demonstrating a genuine interest, you foster a stronger connection and show your commitment to their endeavours.

2. Collaborate with & support their Coaches:

Coaches are the key role in your child's training and development. Establish open communication with the coach to gain insights into your child's progress, strengths, and areas needing improvement. Understand the training schedule, practice expectations, and the coach's feedback. Collaborating with the coach allows you to align your support with their guidance, ensuring a cohesive approach.

3. Support Physical Conditioning:

Help them create a dedicated practice space at home that gives them the space for practice of routines or drills to develop their skills. Avoid sugary snacks and fast food, which can hinder their performance.... we all know the feeling of a quick sugar high and the low energy that quickly follows! 5. Foster Mental Well-being:

Competitions can be mentally demanding, with pressure to perform well and potential nervousness. Help your child manage their mental well-being by teaching relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or visualisation. Encourage positive self-talk and remind them to focus on their own progress rather than comparing themselves to others. Reinforce the notion that mistakes are part of the learning process, and self-belief is key to success.

6. Attend Performances and Rehearsals:

Show your support by attending any of your child's open rehearsals and performances. Cheer them on after practices and showcase genuine excitement for their progress. By being present, you create a positive and encouraging atmosphere that boosts their confidence. Offer constructive feedback when appropriate, emphasising their strengths and areas for improvement in a supportive manner.

7. Encourage Rest and Recovery:

In the midst of intense preparation, it is essential to prioritise rest and recovery. Help your child establish a consistent sleep schedule to ensure they get enough rest. Encourage relaxation activities such as stretching, foam rolling, or gentle yoga to alleviate muscle tension. Help them understand how to listen to their bodies and give it what it needs to progress in the sport they love. A well-rested and rejuvenated athlete performs at their best.
